Velocity
The amount of work a team finishes in a sprint, usually counted in story points, tracked over several sprints to forecast what it can take on next. It describes the team's own past pace. It is not a score for comparing teams or a target to push upward.
Example: A team finishes 21, 18 and 24 points in three sprints, so it plans around 20 for the next one. A manager asks them to commit to 30 "to stretch." They ship 17, skip testing to keep up, and spend the following sprint fixing bugs. Velocity is a forecast. Once it becomes a target, it stops forecasting anything.
