Cohort Analysis
Grouping users by when they started, or by another shared trait, and tracking each group separately over time. It stops a growing user base from hiding a product that is getting worse, because every cohort's retention is visible on its own.
Example: Active users are up 30% this quarter and the dashboard looks healthy. Split by sign-up month, the January cohort kept 40% of users after 60 days but the March cohort kept only 25%. Growth was covering a drop that started with the March pricing change.
